Ward’s Boards

ss

We are Andrew & Jeanne Ward who live in Bridgton, Maine, which is the heart of western Maine’s lakes region. We love living here and being able to enjoy the beautiful mountains and lakes.

Our woodworking journey began shortly after we got married in October 2002. At that time, we lived in Waldoboro, Maine, and resided in a small mobile home. We needed a storage area for our lawnmower and garden tools, so bought a skill saw and a drill to aid in the construction. This progressed into building steps for a family member and helping with miscellaneous tasks. Little did we know that this was the beginning of our woodworking journey.

Hallett Paintings

ss

I have lived in mid-coast Maine since 1983. I began painting in 1981, and full time in 2005. Having spent 2019 many years in Mexico as a child and young adult my original acrylic paintings tend to interpret Maine in unusually colorful ways. I have sold several hundred paintings locally over the past several years. Last year I began to produce prints of my originals and found they were extremely popular.

Raye’s Mustard

ss

Raye’s Mustard, one of Down East Maine’s oldest small family businesses invites you to visit our website to learn more about a Maine tradition that dates back to 1900, and that we are proud to carry on as the 4th generation of the Raye family to own and operate Raye’s Mustard Mill.

Our historic Eastport mill is a working museum, and the Nation’s only remaining traditional stone ground mustard mill. The authentic cold-grind process we use to make mustard preserves the taste qualities of the natural seeds and spices and results in a uniquely flavorful product.

That is why Raye’s Mustards have won over 40 prestigious national and international awards in the past decade. We are especially proud that Raye’s Down East Schooner Mustard (our signature flavor) has repeatedly won the Gold medal in the Classic American Yellow category at the World-Wide Mustard Competition held annually in Napa Valley.

Royal Rose Syrups

ss

Topher Mallory and Matt Page, the brand-new co-owners of Royal Rose, both remember their first taste of a Royal Rose cocktail. Out at one of his favorite spots, Buzz Maine, Matt ordered a cocktail, took one sip, and grabbed the bartender before he could walk away. “The intensity and purity of the flavors, aromas and colors blew me away,” Topher explains. “I had to know how they had distilled so much taste into just a few teaspoons.”

Turns out, the small-batch, locally sourced, certified organic syrups were simmering just 20 minutes down the road in Maine. Royal Rose Syrups was founded by husband-and-wife team Emily and Forrest in Brooklyn and had moved operations to Brunswick, Maine in 2012. When Matt and Topher stopped by the shop in 2016 to see the Royal Rose kitchen for themselves, they had one goal in mind: to make Royal Rose the exclusive syrup in the tasting room of their own company, Split Rock Distilling in Newcastle.

The two companies shared a commitment to sustainability, authenticity, and extraordinary quality. “Royal Rose Syrups were the perfect pairing for our organic, grain-to-glass whiskeys, vodkas, bourbons and gins,” Topher says. “With Royal Rose, every single element in a cocktail can have the same quality, sustainability, and attention to detail. Other mixers muddied or masked the flavors we had worked so hard to create. Royal Rose reveals the true spirit.”

Over the past year, the two companies forged a stronger connection, collaborating on recipes, cocktails, and sharing sourcing, suppliers, and more than a few friendly drinks. So when Emily and Forrest decided to pursue new adventures in 2018, it felt right to entrust Royal Rose to Topher and Matt. The Royal Rose staff supported the transition and stayed on to keep everything running smoothly. Topher and Matt are not changing anything but they are determined to offer even more of a good thing: short-run seasonal syrups, regional flavors, larger bottle sizes, and more to the Royal Rose product line.

“We already live the small-batch life,” says Matt. “Royal Rose bottles fit perfectly alongside our barrels. We respect the history, we savor the recipes, we see the possibilities, and we will keep Royal Rose the company its customers care so much about.”

Pine Rim Publishing

ss

Books from Pine Rim Publishing provide history enthusiast with carefully researched stories about places and people of America. “Connecting Maine’s Capitals by Stagecoach” places emphasis on road building; stage line formation; and taverns or stage stops along the routes. Individual experiences. comments and editorials are added to support the idea that stagecoaches provided the best way to get there, until the railroads came along.
Our latest publication is a book on the history of Martin’s Point and the Marine Hospital in Portland, Maine. The hospital has been located on the Point since 1859 and is still being used by Martin’s Point Health Care for offices and meetings. The Point’s documented history began in the mid 1600s when Richard Martin married Widow Atwell and it became a working farm.
Masters degree in Electrical Engineering but inspired by my history teacher, Elizabeth Ring, at Deering High School in Portland to write history books.
