William Janelle

ss

I am a self-taught sculptor who works primarily in wood. I grew up in Saco, Maine and been carving for over forty years. As a subtractive sculptor, I take away from a single block with hand tools, often leaving tool marks behind as a sort of fingerprint. My preferences of wood are apple, cherry, butternut and walnut. These are hardwoods with very distinctive grains and colors. I also work in marble, soapstone, alabaster, pumpkin, ice and snow.

My style is a fusion of realism and neo-classicalism. This enables the viewer to recognize the subject matter and at the same time allows me the freedom of self-expression. The goal of each piece is to show motion in the subject matter. Whether it be a puffin standing on a rock, with its head turned ninety degrees, inquisitively looking at something that just startled it or a falcon, half second from flight. The sculpture’s emotion allows the viewer to recognize a bit of humanity in the subject portrayed.

I was juried to exhibit in the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, Rockport, ME, Messler Gallery “MAINE WOOD 2020” Show, where I received the “Outstanding Craftsmanship Award”.  I have won more than a hundred ribbons, Best of Show awards, and have been featured on TV – Steve Minich, WMTW segment “Made in Maine”; Doug Rafferty’s ‘Doug’s Discoveries’ , newspaper features and Lake Living Magazine.  I now live in Bridgton, Maine with my wife, Loraine and our dog, Isabel.  She is now helping me with my new venture, making cigar box guitars.  Check out my new Facebook page, Feathercrest Guitars.

Lobster Buoy Birdhouse Co.

ss

Our lobster buoy birdhouses, suet feeders, buoys, planters, and ornaments are designed to resemble vintage buoys that lobstermen used in the early 1900’s to identify their traps.  We construct each buoy by hand in our shop in Lisbon Falls.  The cedar wood is from northern Maine and the rope handles are recycled lobster trap rope from local fishermen.   We like to think of our products as fun and practical… birds love them and they add a splash of color and coastal charm to any home or garden.

Butler Woodworking

ss

At Butler Woodworking our greatest hope is to handcraft fine wooden products from domestic and exotic hardwoods which you will enjoy using just as much as we love creating them. We have handmade items such as wood French Rolling Pins, Traditional Rolling Pins, Cutting Boards, Butcher Blocks, Bottle Toppers, Bottle Holders, Pens, Letter Openers, Mouse Pads, Trivets, Vases, Shaker Oval Boxes, and Shaker Style Carriers. These wood products can be made with a single hardwood like Mahogany, Maple, Walnut or Cherry. We also create combination pieces which include exotic woods like Canary, Tigerwood, Purpleheart, Tulip, Yellowheart, Bubinga, Rosewood…………..

We pride ourselves on our ability to craft products designed specifically for you. Custom made items can be made with the woods you choose. These can range from several exotic or domestic woods to handcrafted pieces made from your wooden family heirlooms such as mantle pieces.

When you buy our handmade wooden products or work with us to create custom wood pieces you are dealing directly with us. My wife Connie and I continue to build this business together. I have always had a passion for woodworking. I have spent countless hours researching and learning about wood during the past 30 years. Hand turning an item such as a French Rolling Pin starts with the tree itself and learning the unique characteristics of each piece of wood I use. Attending The Center of Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport, Maine as well as The Woodturning School in Damariscotta, Maine and the Homestead Woodworking School in New Hampshire have helped me enhance my ability to craft several usable wood products and custom handmade wood pieces.

Boothbay Craft Brewery, Inc.

ss

The idea of a true authentic neighborhood brewery and tavern has been a passion of ours since 2005. After managing and rebuilding a lobster wharf, we realized that ownership and completely authentic relationships are what makes a business run crisply and smoothly. We decided to bring it down to a more personal neighborhood level that would help shape our communities, our country, and hopefully our world. We feel some of these qualities have been lost to the ballooning iron-clad commercial enterprises in our world. We intend to offer those qualities again here at the Brewery and Watershed Tavern tap house.
In 2009 we started to build our own vision of a tavern, carving from the most important ingredient: Community. In order to create a true “public house,” where we hope to spark conversations and visions for a positive change in our hometown, state and country. It is small, well-built with real homegrown timbers, sawn off our very own sawmill from trees donated by our enthusiastic supporters of the project. Having a brewery that produces fresh local beers made in the stalwart tradition of hardy Mainers, served with classic simple, yet flavorful all natural foods in a warm friendly atmosphere. Heavy post and beam construction is the signature of a Mitchell-built structure. The beams are adorned in carvings that proclaim their donor or place of origin. Milled on our very own sawmill, handcrafted with generational tools handed down by our forefathers. Hand-fitting the joints and carving the names makes it like the character of our beers. Real, and makes it’s an example of our community. “Ya’ get what ya’ see!”

MAINELY LABS STUDIO

ss

Mainely Labs Studio is located in the Knightville neighborhood of South Portland, Maine. The working studio and gallery opened in Portland in 2005 when Jim Williams embarked on a new career as an artist after a twenty two-year business career in various corporate environments. Jim calls his original art “Lab Art,” for the focus is on images of Labrador Retrievers. He lives in Cape Elizabeth, Maine with his wife Carol.

“In my Lab Art, I try to capture the essence of Labrador Retrievers. Labs have a distinct shape, which you can instantly pick out even from a distance. I love to use bold colors to set of the distinct Lab shape. It doesn’t matter if the dog is a black Lab, yellow Lab, chocolate Lab, white Lab, silver Lab, blue Lab or red Lab…you recognize a Lab when you see one. I like the way they stand, sit, walk, run, romp, swim, jump, chase, retrieve, sleep, or just stare at you when you are at the dinner table. They are all alike, yet they are all different. My paintings don’t represent any one Lab, but all Labs.

I can’t talk about the art without talking about chasing dreams. I’ve been chasing dreams my whole life and Mainely Labs Studio is the latest of my dreams to come true.

I grew up in Ohio and lived there for thirty-five years. After many vacations to New England to ski and bike and eat lobsters, I often sat in my office and daydreamed about living along the rocky seacoast of Maine. In 1989, I decided to stop daydreaming and do something about it; I quit my job and moved to Maine.

As part of that vision, I had often pictured myself running on a sandy beach with a black Labrador Retriever bounding along beside me. Although there are certainly Labs in every state of the nation and all over the world, I have to believe that there are more Labs per capita in Maine than anywhere else. They seem to be everywhere. If we had a state dog, the Lab would be it.

In 1991, Carol & I married and two days later we brought home a 6-week old black Lab Puppy. For the next eleven years, Mattie was my constant companion and best buddy. No one had more fun or loved life as much as Mattie did. And yes, she ran with me on the beaches near our Cape Elizabeth home. As we ran by lighthouses and lobster traps, I often reminded myself that I was living my dream.

In 2001, one of my employees told me that she was taking a painting class at the Maine College of Art (MECA). I had never picked up a (fine arts) paint brush in my life, but I heard myself say, “that’s something I’ve always wanted to do.” As soon as those words came out of my mouth, my next thought was, “well, what’s stopping you?” After the first class I had discovered a new passion and soon had a new dream. In 2005, after becoming more and more disenchanted with work in the corporate world, I left my job and soon Mainely Labs Studio was born. I’m still chasing my dreams…”
