American Roots

ss

American Roots’ mission is to create jobs that are more meaningful, fair, and good-paying. Through our example we will help rebuild American manufacturing and its economy in a more just and sustainable way.

By providing high-quality, durable clothing made from 100% American-sourced materials by Union labor in America, we are proving that success does not have to come at the expense of workers or the quality of the products they make.

As diverse as America itself, we are made up of new immigrants and the children of the old. We are people who lean to the left and those who lean right. We are not defined by the color of our skin or the people we love. We are driven by our mission, connected by the work we do and our belief that quality, honesty, and fairness are the keys to our success — and America’s.

West Maquoit Vinegar Works

ss

Our roots run deep, not only in the land of Maine, but in the food systems, culture, and economy.
West Maquoit Vinegar Works combines ancient traditions with modern technology. It is a practice of patience. A work of art & science. The foundation of all our vinegars is Maine. Taking inspiration from what surrounds us, grounds us. By collaborating with Maine farmers, malters, brewers and other artisans, West Maquoit Vinegar Works brings together the work of many, and through the power of culture and Cultures creates a unique vinegar.

The Vinegar Works believes in a sustainable process that utilizes, supports, and elevates the products of the Maine food network. We are committed to supporting the producers, growers and creators in our local region to create something new.

Our vinegar is more than just an ingredient.

Favorite vinegars- The basement of Fore Street had a large cask of cider vinegar that made an early impression on me. Allagash Brewing had a barrel or two of what was known as “the Vinagash” that a select few Chefs had access to. That was some eye opening stuff and really got me thinking about the possibilities of ale vinegars. Hard to pick a favorite of my own work, often the one I am most excited about is the next project I am dreaming up! The Wild Blueberry Vinegar is one of my favorites. Uniquely delicious flavor profile and a great backstory. It is so bracingly acidic and crisp, but retains the classic fruitiness of the berries. The week the wild blueberries roll in is a wild one, hot and sticky and bits of fruit all over your arms, good fermenting fun. The resulting blueberry stock rests a bit over the winter and then as the spring starts to warm up I begin the process of the second fermentation into vinegar. By the time the summer wraps up and the berries roll in again we are usually just emptying the last of last year’s stock into the fermenter.

Yo Momma’s Apron Strings

ss
Why aprons? Because I had a yen to make one for myself and being someone who prefers old/vintage over new I went in search of a pattern. The first one I bought was a reproduction pattern from the 20‘s that required one yard of fabric and looked simple enough to make. That was the beginning. It has been trial and error as I figure out what aprons and fabrics work both for me and for those who like to buy them. What stays consistent is my desire to keep it fun and part of that means I buy enough fabric for one apron, making each apron unique – there are two exceptions to that rule: linen aprons and child’s aprons. I have the honor being the first to try on each newly minted apron to see how the apron design works with the chosen fabric. Most of the time I am pleased….Yo Momma’s Apron Strings evolves as I tweak the balance between my aprons and the rest of my life. Each year offers new potential as I build on the previous year’s experience to try to make things work more effectively. There are lots of aprons yet to make and new ways to get them to those who would like to buy them. I think that’s enough to keep me busy.

Marin Skincare

ss

Gentle & effective skincare products for eczema, psoriasis and dry skin, using a glycoprotein found in lobster as the key ingredient. – Hello! We’re Amber and Patrick, the co-founders of Marin Skincare. While in grad school for Biomedical Engineering at UMaine, we worked with lobster scientists that discovered how a protein found in lobster that allows them to pop-off and regenerate limbs, could actually help hydrate and repair the skin barrier.

During this time, Amber had been suffering from terrible eczema all over her body for years, so while researching it decide to make our own skincare product using the Glycoproteins – after nothing else worked, within a few days of using our Soothing Hydration Cream, her skin was completely clear and back to normal! It completely changed her life – Amber could finally go out into the world without hiding her skin behind scarves, hoodies and hats, and just be comfortable in her own skin.

Because of this, we dedicated our careers to bringing Lobster Glycoproteins into the world to help people like her. Whether it’s skin concerns such as eczema and psoriasis, or dry, flaky, cracked skin from harsh Maine winters, we’re on a mission to bring this natural relief to as many people as possible, and energized to be using one of Maine’s natural resources to do it!

I am a Maine based artist currently practicing on Mount Desert Island. At the University of Maine I was a double major in Studio Art and Art Education. I have been teaching art on the coast of Maine for the past 12 years in the public school setting. It is here that I get to share my love for art and visual culture with my students.

My work is heavily inspired by place. Through the use of line, perspective and color, my work attempts to recreate the feeling of place more than a visual representation.

Mattie Rose Art

ss

Mattie Rose Templeton is inspired by the living and natural world that surrounds us all. Through art, she explores our connection to nature, including the undeniable fragility that is found there. And the importance for us to protect it. Art, since the beginning, has been a way to record history through visual storytelling. Mattie Rose attempts to produce art that moves the viewer beyond the piece itself, and into that storytelling place.

Using an “old fashioned” ink well, with variously-sized nibs, Mattie Rose is able to add different texture and line. She often avoids using color, because she finds the contrast of black and white more dramatic. While the subject matter of her work is based in realism, there is a conceptual quality added through geometric shapes and patterns.

Mattie Rose is a self-taught artist, born and raised in rural Maine. As a child, she had a plethora of illustrated children’s books at her finger tips. Mattie Rose and her three siblings were homeschooled and the family lived off grid. This alternative lifestyle was the foundation for the blooming of her vivid imagination. Much of her adult life has been spent in the rich and thriving art world of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Mattie Rose’s work has been greatly influenced by Spanish American and Native American art styles.

Today, Mattie Rose is an active part of the western Maine arts community. Her work has been on display in many towns and cities across New England. She has participated in multi day artisan fairs including Portland, Belfast, Camden, Freeport, Bridgton, Lovell, New Gloucester, North Conway and Portsmouth NH, Bennington VT, and Long Island NY. Additionally, Mattie Rose’s work is available for purchase at Forage in Lewiston, The Local Hub in Greenwood, Cafe DiCocoas in Bethel, True North in Bethel, Nezinscot Farm in Turner, The Fair Share in Norway, Smedbergs in Norway, Gallery 302 in Bridgton, The Center Lovell Market in Lovell, Fair Ground in Fryeburg, Autumn Nomad in Jackson NH, The Met in North Conway NH, and the Local Grocer in North Conway NH. She also continually creates commissioned art for business graphics and private buyers.
