Your Day Just Started

ss

I began my journey to become an entrepreneur when I worked at The Willie Wags in Downtown Bangor from 2018-2020. In 2017, I had discovered the art of hand lettering and calligraphy and turned those skills into a custom goods business called Blooming Tree Studio, and I wanted to learn from a small business owner on what it’s like to run a business. Little did I know that I would learn so much more than expected: I learned how to run my own events (both as the host herself and as the location to host others’ events; I learned how to communicate with vendors and use different types of websites for both retail and wholesale; I developed a more specific way to take product photography (my background is in marketing and graphic design, specifically for retail). I historically am a very creative person, and alongside my husband Chris, developed the idea for Your Day Just Started.

I had a started a Tumblr blog in 2011 while in college called “Your Day Just Started,” and to me it was a special place that I created to relax and to dream about what I wanted my life to look like in the future, sort a virtual vision board comprised of quotes and pictures. That idea always stuck with me because it was a place I could turn to or start my day in the hopes of continued good energy throughout the day. Ten years later we developed that idea to encompass using our creative traits and having a focus on mental health.

During the pandemic, we burned candles constantly because they made us feel better and made our home feel a bit happier to be in. We decided to try out making candles, and developed our original idea of candle tins, wax melts and room sprays. We then launched our first line of products with the idea that our ideal customer was someone who wanted to not only have something simple and beautiful in their home/office, but used our products to feel better in general. Essentially we aimed to create a simple, minimalistic and beautiful brand of consumable, handmade goods that encouraged comfort in uncomfortable times, like experiencing a global pandemic or even just making a hard day more manageable (because everyone experiences those.. we’re all human). We then ran into sourcing issues whether it was availability or expensive price, so we decided to create our own vessels made of concrete. We taught ourselves how to safely make candles, and our concrete vessels and perfect our craft by learning from experts in the industry and investing in proper safety equipment and materials. We are a fully in-house business, so we not only manufacture all of our goods, but we do all of our marketing, web design, labels and product design.

We have hosted events to teach others the relaxing craft of candle making and plan to continue the growth and experience of our events. In 2022, we launched our second line of concrete vessels that included colors that are a calming and minimalistic aesthetic. From the beginning, we chose to have a focus of our business to include things like fragrances that are free of toxins and sealant for the interior of our vessels this is non-toxic. We continue to shift our products to even healthier ingredients, such as moving from a 100% soy wax to a vegan apricot coco wax blend.

We have a lot of big ideas to grow into as we develop our brand and community and believe we can continue to encourage personal growth while offering quality, Maine made products.

Mainers

ss

We’re using our 40 years of know-how, passion, and pride to bring you the Mainers Mitt. One hundred percent handcrafted in Maine using more than 95% US-sourced materials, you will not find a higher-quality, better performing product for extreme winter protection. Since 1980, we’ve handcrafted our commercial-grade cryogenic gloves, aprons, and shoe covers (trusted by leading labs, the US military, and even NASA) out of our Mount Desert headquarters. We’ve been in business since 1980, and many of our employees were with us at the very beginning. That translates to millions of stitches, hundreds of thousands of cuts, hundreds of industry-leading improvements, and countless satisfied customers.
In 2000, we decided to form a new brand for consumers and the same people stitching gloves for NASA are now stitching mitts and glove for you! Our Mainers Mitts are the first of many products we are producing for consumers – outdoor enthusiasts, skiers, mountaineers, snowmobilers, everyone who needs to shovel snow or clean snow off a car or walk their dog on a cold, Maine day.
Our Mainers gloves and mitts have been subjected to the very same rigorous testing we put our cryogenic gloves through. We are invested in Maine – We handcraft our mitts here in Trenton, Maine. It’s a community we’re committed to building something special while creating local jobs. It’s also a place that has taught us little something about how harsh winter can be.
95% of our materials are sourced in the U.S. and some are from Maine. 100% of our manufacturing takes place in our facility in Trenton, ME – 15 minutes from Acadia National Park.

Sarah Ann Smith

Color, line, texture, rhythm and movement, imagery and stories inspire me. As a child I wanted to be an artist and admired those who could draw. My path to art has been circuitous and unusual: as a young child, I lived in Spain, Thailand and Argentina. Shortly after my sixth birthday, we returned to the United States to live. That year a neighbor girl made an apron for my favorite doll, sparking a fascination with fiber that continues to this day.

I want to share my passion to create, to design textile art and surface pattern. Having been a professional vagabond for my first four decades, my art now celebrates the home-of-my-soul that I found in midcoast Maine. My path to art included being a Legislative Assistant to a US Congressman then a US Foreign Service Officer for nearly 15 years, sewing for an Interior Designer, then becoming a mom and launching my own small business.

My work includes the bestselling book ThreadWork Unraveled, numerous articles and publication credits spanning from Australia to Europe and include Quilting Arts Magazine, Machine Quilting Unlimited, Germany’s Professional Patchwork, France’s QuiltMania, The Art of Sarah Ann Smith, so far… and more. My art has been exhibited in the US, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. I’ve appeared on Quilting Arts TV, on The Quilt Show, and have a video workshop from Interweave Press. I’ve taught across the United States since 2004 and currently take only selected bookings in person and online.

Mumbai to MAINE, LLC

ss

Mumbai to MAINE was born in my kitchen, my culinary sanctuary, here in Boothbay, Maine. But it was also born out of nostalgia and a longing to feel connected to Mumbai and my childhood. Food has this power to bring people together and it also has the influence to transport you to your childhood or a special place you love. In my case, it was my humble apartment in Mumbai, at my mother’s heels, taking in all the intoxicating aromatics of her scratch, home-style cooking.

At the age of 16, I left Mumbai and moved to Canada with my family, our lives packed in 12 suitcases. Fast forward, I am fortunate to call Maine my home now for over a decade. Since 2015, I have shared my Mumbai to MAINE story through my blog, podcast, social media channels and teaching Indian cuisine at Stonewall Kitchen Cooking School. I’ve done this with intention and passion, because it has kept me connected and rooted to my childhood in Mumbai and my Goan (Portuguese-Indian) heritage.

To celebrate Maine’s bicentennial and gastronomic talent, I produced and hosted Mumbai to MAINE’s podcast in 2020 showcasing some of Maine’s most accomplished culinary tastemakers. I also produce and host “Talking Food In Maine” a series of intimate one-on-one conversations with notable culinary pioneers who have made a substantial contribution to the culinary arts in the state of Maine.

Recently I was invited to be a guest chef instructor at the Milk Street with Christopher Kimball Online Cooking School, Boston.

I am so excited to share my debut simmer sauce collection, launched in the heart of the pandemic. It’s an homage to my talented mother, who was and will always be the best cook I know and a heartfelt love letter to my Mumbai.

As an immigrant, a daughter of immigrants, a female founder of a diversity owned business here in Maine, I am leading this luxury brand of simmer sauces with purpose, passion, perspective, and a strategic plan to continue to anchor the brand here in Maine, expand Maine’s diversity footprint and create valuable and meaningful jobs, contributing right back to Maine’s economy.

Mumbai to MAINE is more than simmer sauce. It’s Maine’s first award-winning, Indian inspired culinary brand, intentionally bridging cultural divides one jar of simmer sauce at a time.

My hope is these simmer sauces inspire you to be creative in your daily cooking, up your spice game in the kitchen and also introduce you to authentic, regional Indian cuisine from all over India.

MOO-YOUNG LLC

ss

I am a self-taught leather artist. At the age of 5, my grandmother taught me to sew and from there, I fell in love with textiles. Inspired by the 60’s and 70’s and the love of tie-dye, I found myself wanting to wear these pieces filled with color. The problem is that most tie-dye is cotton, and it wasn’t reasonable being in a cold climate. Cleaning up my closet, I found a swatch of black leather and wondered if I could remove some of the color and create my own tie-dyed leather. From there I was met with a lot of “no’s” on dying leather. So naturally, I accepted the challenge and the journey started.

I am constantly inspired by nature and all things around me, but mostly, it’s the leather and it’s unique story that reaches me. The edge of a hide, or the markings has the power to suddenly put an idea into my head and inspire.

Whitney Gill

ss

Whitney Gill’s life journey reflects intricate pathways of creativity and artistic influence. Her focus lies in functional ceramics, shaping white clay into simple forms adorned with bold brushstrokes, stencils, and sgraffito. Whitney’s pieces exhibit intuitive movement, gentle repetition, and vibrant colors. She creates small series that she sells at various local venues, including craft shows, markets, galleries, and open studio events at her home in Bowdoin, Maine. Whitney is deeply involved in the craft community and currently serves as the Executive Director of partner organizations Maine Crafts Association and Shop Maine Craft.

Whitney’s inspiration stems from the artists’ way of life and magic found in rural places. Her muses include rushing streams, underwater reflections, stacked stones, mossy logs, vivid sunsets, rolling hills, and long shadows. Through her work, she explores the deep connection between our bodies and the singular moments in a landscape that is ever changing.
