Overview

I grew up in New York City and came to Maine in 2018 to study wooden boatbuilding, drawn by a desire to work with my hands and learn how things are made. That path led me to become a wooden boatbuilder in Midcoast, and then to metal: first learning from local knifemakers and then spending two years apprenticing at a third-generation blacksmith shop. Since then, I’ve continued to seek out craftspeople and traditions that challenge the way I think about making, including studying with makers across the United States and in Japan.

My work with Soma brings those experiences together with the design sensibility I grew up with in a creative family. I’m interested in the space between traditional craft and contemporary design, and in making objects that feel distinctly of the present while retaining the evidence of the hands that made them. At the heart of what I do is the belief that the things we choose to live with can help us pay attention both to our surroundings and to the small, everyday acts that make up a life.
