Overview

I am the maker behind Luci’s Lather Lab, a Maine-based studio shaped by science, teaching, and a lifelong love of hands-on creativity. I am a trained chemist with a Ph.D. in chemistry and spent many years working in laboratories and teaching chemistry at the college level. That background instilled a deep respect for careful formulation, process control, and understanding how materials behave—principles that now guide my work as a maker.

Soapmaking began as a creative outlet and a way to bring chemistry out of the classroom and into everyday life. What started as small experiments at my kitchen counter evolved into a dedicated studio practice rooted in Maine’s strong maker culture and my belief in learning by doing.

I draw inspiration from the natural rhythms of life in Maine, from the changing seasons to the resourcefulness and curiosity of the local creative community. My work is also shaped by education and storytelling—I love helping people understand what goes into the products they use and why thoughtful formulation matters.

Luci’s Lather Lab is also joyfully influenced by my studio companions: a group of ever-present rescue cats who remind me to stay curious, playful, and grounded. At its core, my work reflects the belief that science and craft belong together, that education can be approachable and fun, and that small, local production can be both intentional and full of personality.
