Member Profile:
The Maine State Tartan© was designed at the request of a Mainer, in 1964 by Nova Scotian, Sol Gilis. It continues to be the original, authentic design in the following four colors: Azure Blue for the sky; Royal Blue for the waters; Dark Green for the forests and trees; and a thin Red line for the "bloodline" of Maine's people. Since reviving it, and copyrighting the pattern and colors to insure its originality, the Maine Tartan and Tweed Company began licensing other Maine companies in 1988, to produce fabric from which many products were made, mostly in Maine. As a lovely representative design of Maine, the oldest state tartan in the U.S., many organizations, pipe bands, a youth chorale, and a community band, are wearing it for performances, nationally and internationally. It continues to be the design for those of non Scottish origins especially, with roots in Maine.
