Member Bio:
Ron Gelinas grew up near Harvard University and developed an early interest in fossils and gems from his visits to Harvard's museum. In high school Ron concentrated his elective studies in geology and art. In 1976 he moved to Maine to immerse himself in its rich tradition of arts and crafts. He spent much of his spare time exploring Maine's mines and learning about Maine gems from the people who contributed to the mining culture. His natural interest in gems fused with his instincts as an artist and craftsman when he learned to cut and polish gems. From there it was a short and natural step when he developed the skills to create unique gold settings in which to mount his gems. Ron continued to refine his craft while studying under Master Goldsmith Addison Saunders. Ron developed a demand for his creations through word of mouth and selling at local craft fairs. In 1990 he established Mainestone Jewelry as a home based business to sell his personally designed jewelry and custom cut Maine Gems. In 1998, due to increased demand, Ron and his wife Cindy opened a retail store at 161 Front Street in downtown Farmington, Maine. In April 2004 Mainestone Jewelry moved to the old Flood Shoe Store building at 179 Broadway. After extensive renovation it is now a larger and more comfortable space to display and sell his hand crafted jewelry, perform repairs and commissions for custom designs. The store also offers Franklin Counties largest selection of Maine Gems, to include: tourmaline, amethyst, aquamarine, morganite, topaz and garnet. In addition, Ron and Cindy display a variety of minerals and fossils which they delight in showing to the local school kids during tours of their store. You, also, are cordinally invited to take a tour at 179 Broadway in downtown Farmington, Maine.
